Call It What It Is

One of the things that makes me angry when I read the news is the sexualisation of children. This is so normal that most of us don’t even realise when it happens.

I have written before on this blog about the age of consent, here.

I am going to write about it again. Here is an article I read on the BBC website today: and here is the first offending paragraph: “Some of the men were married with children and individually preyed on the girl, committing offences including having sex with her.”

They are talking about a 13 year old girl. She is under the age of consent. They did not have sex with her. They raped her. There is a difference. It is disturbing to me to see how often this happens. The language used removes the violence and the violation.  The article does talk about sexual exploitation and uses words such as ‘preyed’, but it happens all too often that the language used undermines the horror.
